I'll just keep it to myself in the sun, in the sun

this past week has been the very definition of an emotional roller coaster, not just those of myself, but everyone around me. Thankfully, the past 24 hours or so were possibly the best of my life. I went to the She and Him show at Sloss Furnace -which, by the way, is beautiful and the picture of intriguing. I'll definitely have to make a stop next time I'm in town and take a tour- and danced, laughed, sang and fell in love with M. Ward and Zooey all over again.

I'm so happy I decided to go up a day early, it was maybe the best rash emotional decision I've made in a while. Overall, this past long weekend was honestly the best girldate I've had in an extremely long time, with a spur of the moment decision to make the trip to Ikea in Atlanta. What should've taken two hours ended up being a five hour drive with countless illegal uturns and three point turns in the Atlanta highways... Thank God for A) Liz and my's ability to never be around cops and B) however we managed that without getting in a ridiculous wreck.
I'm not exactly sure what the past week means, however, even calm and collected, I still want to look into internships or working somewhere where I'd be able to live on my own, or with roommates or something of the sort. I understand that every person I know has no earthly idea of who they are or what they're doing at this point of our lives, but I do realize I need to start listening instead of just hearing, and hopefully my internal dialogue will eventually stop playing when I should be paying attention to the rest of the world.

My heart is full of pages of honest, bitter, questioning, painful words sentences poetry prose of things I have no right to say, no one to say to.
I understand your disdain, but I thought mutual respect was a given. This town, she's screaming at me to leave, and never come back.

My mom offered to fly me to my brother's for the rest of the summer, and God I wish I could. Maybe Beaverton wouldn't throw everything it has at me within a week.
Fairhope isn't my home. Next summer, I make my new home wherever I get an internship. Birmingham, Atlanta, Montgomery, Jacksonville, who knows. Symbolism has never been so prevalent in my life as it is now.

I didn't ever believe everyone that said you'll grow apart from your high school friends once you get to college. It could never happen, my inner monologue kept repeating, we're almost all going to the same school, we'll always stay tight knit. And here I am, not even home a week, and already yearning to go back to Auburn, to go back to the people I've met there, the people who lit the spark in my soul. I adore everything about Fairhope, except who it turns me into. I feel myself retreating into my shell, into my uncomfortable state, back to everything I thought I shed behind. And maybe I did, just left all my dead skin, all my old self, here.

I'll take you over if you let me.

I'm not sure if it's anything special or particular, but I happen to be a huge Blink fan. It's bordering on obsession sometimes, to the point where I cried when I found out my ticket to see them last fall got given away (embarrassing, I know), and I have pretty much every song ever by them. They're my sad music, my happy music, my punch a wall music, you know the drill. But for some reason, listening to them today made me realize something. The people we miss, or not even miss, just feel like they're a part of our souls, regardless of how much negative energy there is between you, how little one of you may care about the other, there's no reason for them to still be inside your head, in the least bit. They're not the same person they were, and they probably weren't who you thought even then. You get exasperated when you talk to them, because they're not treating you the way you remember, the way you went over in your head all those months ago when you were sad. They're not treating you the way you remember, because they never did. Casting all your dreams, all your sketches of your dream love, your everything on them makes you dislike talking to them even more, because they'll never be who you thought they were, but they never really were that person, so it's not their fault. You cast all this responsibility on them to be what you want and need, and what they never were. Maybe that's what broke them, the final straw, what broke the "perfect relationship", the one your mother told you was the one. Maybe we shouldn't dream up who other people should be, they're not the white knight. No one is going to save you from your pissy moods, your frustrations, and if you let them try, they'll end up hating you for thrusting all your responsibilities onto them. I've been on both sides of this equations, and neither side ends up happy, or able to forget or forgive.

Also, please listen to their live album asap, you'll pee laughing.

Sidenote;

looking at pictures from now compared to a year ago, I'm a completely different person, emotionally. Well, I feel like that. My smile is so much happier, more genuine. All the pain behind it is gone. All the secrets, all the stress, the tears... gone. My life is far from perfect, but it's perfect for me. It's so weird. I felt like everything I had then was what I needed, but it made me -and everyone else involved- miserable. It's so weird looking at pictures now, and seeing how happy I really truly am... happiness radiates from the inside out.

The daylight seems to want you just as much as I want you.

Snow Patrol is one of those bands that make me feel so strongly, whether good or bad. They've made my highs higher, my lows dismal, and I've had them playing in my head in so many movie scene style moments and I just feel like my life is film. Does anyone else feel like this? Does your life play by in movie clips and montages, do you hear songs when you're riding in a train through Virginia, getting your heart broken, when your car is getting crumpled and your jaw fractured, seemingly in slow motion? When you close your eyes, do you hear a song, make up visuals in your head? I can't be the only one like this. You have to be so moved too, music has to be in your heart as well.

I have a confession;

it's really not shocking or special, or even worth posting, but I'm watching my last four loads of laundry dry, so might as well pass the time.
I'm so goddamn insecure. And yes, I realize that's worth an eye roll and and "jesus christ shut up", but really really. I hate picking profile pictures on facebook because I'm convinced they're all awkward and unattractive in some aspect. I know I'm a size two, but that doesn't stop me from shuddering whenever I look at myself in the mirror. I hate watching myself walk in shorts; I swear my legs are like jello. I eat healthy (aside from my addiction to ramen and nutella. Except not together, even I'm not that gross) always take the stairs when possible, walk 98% of the time and work out when possible, so I know I'm not a disgusting fuck. I know I'm a model, and I know people have walked up to me and told me I'm one of the most beautiful person they've seen (albeit, they're usually severely intoxicated, or trying to get in my pants),but that doesn't stop me from stressing out over my hair, my thighs or my chest. My feet are insanely wide; so much so an exboyfriend "lovingly" referred to my feet as triangles, or shovels.
This isn't just a pity party post though. Our culture's unsettling. We're programed to hate everything about ourselves, and strive to be someone else. My generation's taught no one's skinny enough, no one's cup size is large enough, your waist isn't small enough.
I am Jane's starving insides. Even looking in my own fridge and pantry; nothing but Lean Cuisines in the freezer, celery and 100 calorie packs in the fridge, Special K and Crystal Light in the pantry. Everyone's striving to starve themselves smaller, fight off the freshman fifteen with Easy Tones and anything Low Cal.
I understand that obesity is the main epidemic of our nation, and health is of the upmost concern. But that doesn't mean I don't feel for the girls wasting away, with their weights in the double digits.

summer lovin'

well goodness gracious. I've neglected this poor blog, and I really should be on my knees brandishing you with chocolates and flowers and groveling for forgiveness. Instead, I've got insomnia and a whole mess of stories. I had a romance (if you can call it that), had that prom, another prom, got a new job, graduated, and moved to Auburn.
'Scuz, wtf?!
I almost feel like an entirely new person from before. Well, not sure if new is the right word, I'm fitting into my old old old skin all over again. I'm being more spontaneous, less shy, and even getting noticed for my "charisma" (although I'm not sure if that's the right word. More like "alcohol induced giggle fits and complete lack of ability to keep my mouth shut"). Most recently -as I refuse to type four months worth of stories in one sitting- I went to Birmingham with Liz last week to see Jukebox the Ghost. I really think that night was when I made up my mind to be the old Gwen, the girl I haven't been in well over a year. I danced more than I have in years, lived without questioning, spoke and acted without thinking about how everyone around me would take my actions/words. I danced to the point of being sore days after, approached boys in bands, and hit on passing cars on the way there; but only when showing off the hunting knife I found on the floor of Miss. Richard's car.
College is in itself a whole new experience, but it feels so familiar and nonthreatening at the same time. I'm living in the suites for the summer; as luxurious as having my own bed and bathroom sounds, it's so damn lonely. I'm yearning for the fall, when I won't be able to be alone, despite how hard I try. I still have yet to make up my mind on whether or not I'll be rushing come August; I want to be in a sorority, but I never feel at ease with older sorority girls and frat boys, not the way I do when I'm with people with more interests and quirks that are similar to my own.

Spring awakening

Spring is in the air, and everything is rosy tinted and sunny. I'm honestly drowning in Finite Math, but since I'm still in high school, I can always take it again next year. I'm heading off to Auburn in a matter of MONTHS, and it's simply terrifying. I'm not nearly old enough to live on my own, but that day is just around the corner. I really never expected this day to come... and now that it's less than three months away, all I want to do is cuddle with my mom and wear my snuggie. Oh Summer semester... you will be the death of me.
However, I'm reveling in my last days in High school. I got asked to my senior prom the other night! It was maybe the most exciting, confidence boosting moment I've ever had; I've never once been asked to a dance, it's always been assumed. Maybe being single has its perks :)

My friend Brandon wrote me a poem asking me, and I honestly was so shocked when I figured it out. He said it was a submission for Visions, and whenever that word is mentioned, I automatically go into business mode, and can't stop thinking about deadlines, meetings, computers, grading submissions and paperwork. In the middle of my rambling about how he missed the last literature deadline and he should just save it for next year, he shoved a folded up piece of looseleaf at me and went to the bathroom... and walked out right when I read the final line "All I'm asking is if you'll go to prom with me."
I squealed. I still smile whenever I think about how cute it was, and how great of a story it makes. I can't wait to tell the next generation about it, and keep little girls dreaming of their prom date, and how they'll get asked. My love life may not have been the best through my four years of high school, but it seems once I stop angsting over boys, my friends are the ones that make me smile.

It's the end of February now, and while the rest of the country is buried under mountains of snow, I'm yearning for warm sunny days and sleeveless dresses. I'm sick of jeans, of hoodies and long sleeves, and northface and cold hands. I guess I'm turning into a free spirit, as I'm sick of being constricted, and all I want is to ride around on my creamy Townie with all my belongings in a little knapsack and mastering the art of riding in a dress.

Oh spring, I'm aching for you.

We live for the fame, fame

So, I had quite the eventful weekend. Photoshoots, photoshoots, photoshoots, party buses, too much Target, Finate Math homework (but I think we all know that's not the focus of today's post), shipping my brother and his girlfriend off to Oregon, which is really, the opposite end of the country, and well, you know.

Both of my looks were for Willo's portfolio- my mom keeps giving me crap about it, but I smell free Senior Portraits in a few months....
Anywho, this is the white trash look, although I prefer to call it sweet home alabama. We might have broken into an abandoned trailer Friday and Saturday...which is why my nose is so red and my legs have even more bruises than usual.

Chirophobia- Fear of hands

This is my absolute favorite. It might be my favorite picture of me ever taken. Really.

so soon to eighteen!

Excuse me, but just allow me to say,
GAH.
My birthday is this coming Sunday! I keep hearing how I need to have a big blow out why-is-there-a-deer-in-the-tub-and-superman-on-the-couch party but I think I'll just do what I usually do - Road trip to Washington DC to march in the March for Life and save some babies!
I've learned a lot while seventeen. I figured I should go ahead and list for you...
1. Boys are only as important as you let them be.
2. Real friends are honest, have fights, don't keep it in, and make up after. But not like a "you're a horrible person" kind of fight. Staying rational and mature will always keep the sisterfriendship alive.
3. Break ups (even if it's not yours) will always have you craving Ben and Jerrys and Pringles.
4. If you can't feel your face, you should probably stay away from the phone and with the sober friend.
5. Mama Baer will always take me shoppin' when I'm feeling down. My two closets and my dresser are overflowing thanks to our "little pick me up"s.
6. Prince Charming doesn't exist.

I promise the next post'll have a lot more pictures ♥

This is the Alabama I love.

Ember and I decided to do some good ol' Geese Scaring this afternoon. We also decided to pretend that we were from National Geographic and talk in British Accents... did I mention that she's editor of the school's newspaper and I'm editor of Lit Mag?

New Year's Eve.
This is the first NYE in ten years where I haven't been planning to go to my town's huge downtown festival... it feels a little odd, honestly. Last year I ended up getting sick and spending the night at home watching the ball drop in Times Square, so I think anything would be much better than last year.
Resolutions for 2010
1. NOT DROP OUT OF COLLEGE MY FIRST SEMESTER. (That's not a real worry, but I felt like it should be a goal.)
2.Always (and I mean always) keep working on being a nicer person. I've made some progress the past few months, but I'm still not exactly where I want to be.
3.Drive slower. I've gotten pulled over three times this year... and it still isn't fun.
4. Gym. blah blah blah...but seriously, I'd like to be down to a comfortable size two. I'm not that far from it, but it'll take some work.
5.Don't date
start dating again
just say no to boys
don't stop talking when I get hit on
Stop worrying about boys, and always remain honest.
I like that one, personally.

Well, I'll make sure to keep you posted on how I do with my goals!
Wish me luck :)

wardrobe: plaid button down/navy skirt - Forever 21, tights- Betsey Johnson, leopard flats, thrift store find

And yes. I was completely sober this night. We just have that kind of relationship.

I love my college ladiessssss.

It's like they're a whole generation of cocktail waitresses.

You know that moment, that feeling? When you give up on being social for the day, climb into bed and prepare for an afternoon of really horrible I can't believe I'm watching this television, and when you turn to the E! Channel, the Top Ten Worst Plastic Surgeries isn't on and instead you catch the opening credits of one of your favorite movies (I don't care who you are)
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
This movie will always turn me into a romantic. I may have had a pretty horrible date the night before, but the second I see Meg Ryan in her eternally frumpy wardrobe, and I start getting hair/apartment envy, I start to wonder if my dream man is actually my business competition and is actually always a block or two behind me, or walking out of Starbucks as I'm walking in. What if, this movie seems to say. What if I fall in love or what if I go through this huge painful life change and I end up not failing? I already love every part of Manhattan, and this movie just makes me swoon. Small bookstores? The Flower District, the Manhattan that no one thinks about, that doesn't love the million dollar dresses or the idea of Prep Schools, or The Real Housewives of New York, or any of that snooty high brow ideas.
I always end up identifying with Meg Ryan whenever I watch this. I always end up narrating my life, I try to see the lighter side of everything, and I'm just so much of a small bookstore kind of girl.

Mmm, Christmas break

Photobucket
Grace and I doing a photoshoot for Willo Photography :) She called them for her senior portraits, and since I've already done quite a bit of work with them, David decided we were going in his portfolio! This is the first picture he's edited; we're quite fierce <3. I can't wait to see what conceptual stuff he has us do when I call him for my senior portraits!

These are all from the Christmas party I went to last night! I've kind of joined the youth group at Eastern Shore Presbyterian, and they threw a wonderful Christmas party at a member's home! As you might be able to tell, the theme of the night was 'creepin', or that's at least what Ember and I'd like you to think. We all played Dirty Santa, and Ember and I decided to be understated and demure; we took pictures of ourselves at Walmart, printed and framed them, then wrapped them and Nate ended up getting them :) I think it was the best present there!
Well, expect for the Obama plate I won...

Outfit Post

Well, this is my first actual fashion post! I decided to combine it with a "I got my hurzcut" post, as I got my hair cut yesterday. Not a huge drastic change; I refused to let her touch the length (as I'm STILL growing it out. Note to self, never get an angled bob ever again.) but I did get some layers added and I got straight bangs! It's a bit of a trade off; I now HAVE to straighten my hair everyday, but I won't be as insecure about my eyebrows (I swear they're not symmetrical. I don't care what you say, I just know it.) and I just think my face was meant to have bangs. I'm the girl who just looks weird with my hair pulled back. But ANYWHO. As I'm still a senior in high school, my weekday wardrobe is limited; navy or white, and collared, to say it as simply as possible. Most girls end up wearing Hollister khakis (I'm usually one of them, but I'm trying to branch out) and a polo or club shirt with sperrys. This one skirt is possibly my favorite article of clothing, simply because it's so versatile. And I managed to snag it out of Grace's pile at Forever 21 earlier this semester, and it was a whopping ten bucks. I think letting her borrow my spare iPod for the year makes up for it.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I ended up wearing my last resort top, the pintuck blouse I bought in New Orleans this past summer desperately needs ironing and well, it's better than the misshaped Hollister polo I wore to work this summer. These shoes are up there in my favorite thrift shop finds; Juicy flats! I thought they were a steal at around fifteen or so, and pretty decent condition. I think the former owner had even wider feet than I do; the leather's a little cracked on the sides and it took me a week or so to break them in. I think they're a sweet alternative to my weathered and beaten Toms that I tend to live in.
I'm so excited for this weekend! My big brother is graduation from Florida State, and I already decided what dress/cardigan combo I'm bringing :) I've yet to decide if tights are appropriate though, as I'm wearing my silver peep toe heels. I'll make sure to keep you updated on my decision ♥

WHY are these so entertaining?

The way it works:
1. Put your iPod on shuffle.
2. Press forward for each question.
3. Use the song title as the answer to the question.

How am I feeling today?
The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - Relient K
(This works)

Will I get far in life?
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
(This doesn't seem like a good answer. What, am I going to whine every time something doesn't go my way?)

(YES. Please tell me that people see me like this.)

When will I get married?

I'm in Miami Trickk - LMAO
(I am a player. I mean, it's the kind of thing I can't help.)

How is today going to be?
Here's your letter- Blink 182
(So I'm growing up even more?)

What is in store for this weekend?
Cheating on you - Franz Ferdinand
(Well, THAT'S awkward.)

What song describes my parents?
Mesopotamia - B52's
(This just makes me think about the fact that my mom did Jazzercise until she was over eight months pregnant with me. Which is why I love this band so. much.)

What song describes your grandparents?
I want candy - Bow Wow Wow
(Negative, my grandma is a health freak. Unless we're talking about Grandma Baer.)

(...THANKS. My iTunes and I are obviously midtiff.)

What song will they play at my funeral?

(This is scary true.)

What does everyone else think my current theme song is?
Like a prayer- Madonna
(Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.)

What type of men/women do you like?
Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
(yesssssss)

What kind of kisser are you?
Fat Lip- Sum 41
(if that's in regard to the fact that I have giant lips, I'm offended. If it's because I'll end up punching you in the face, true dat.)

What's your style?
You belong with me - Taylor Swift
(I am ashamed.)

What kind of lover are you?
Down, Set, Go - Underoath
(...)

What would be playing on a first date?
23- Jimmy Eat World
(Well that's a downer. O HAI I like you and all, but we're going to have an emotional break up.)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Dream Girl- The Lonely Island
(THIS REALLY HAPPENED. This is all the proof I need that I'm marrying Andy Samburg.
Photobucket
Chances are, if you ever see me driving around in Lurlene, my BEAUTIFUL Yaris sedan, I'll be singing along to this album. There's just something about Relient K that I've always loved, and I think it's the face that I've always had religious leanings even when I claimed I didn't. Relient K's always been one of my favorite bands, but in the past few months I've been building up my collection of their songs... maybe that's why my mood's been improving so?

I can't believe this semester's so close to being over. It's the longest I've gone without a boyfriend since I started high school! Hopefully I can make it through the rest of the year being a single lady; I think I'm a lot happier, and everything's just so much easier! This year's been difficult, but I've grown a lot, especially in the past two months. I've learned the difference between being "lonely" and "alone", and while it's still a struggle for me to be okay with being alone for a whole day, I'm trying to learn to be by myself with my thoughts. It's hard though, because I do have a thing for being goofy with everyone!

Related to my love of being around people, I can't decide if I want to rush or not. I'm almost definitely going to Auburn, and I've picked out my roomie (that'd be Julia in Forensics. It was actually her idea, and I think we'd work! We get along but we won't expect to hang out all the time, and we have the same taste in TV shows. Gilmore Girls AND Grey's. Match made in heaven!) and she's planning on rushing, and I've been thinking about it, and I keep changing my mind. Would I fit in with any sorority? I mean, I do love wearing dresses and girl time, and I'm the girl that'll make homemade cookie dough and come over when you're down. But I'm also the girl that loves to look up and learn about film, play video games, and wear my thick rimmed glasses (oh, update. My raybans are on BACK ORDER until the first. Apparently they're handmade in Italy or something?! Good thing I found my Betseys, or I'd be squinting and getting some not so adorable wrinkles.) and read Fight Club and Breakfast at Tiffany's and go thrifting and I just don't know! I know I'll probably end up in a sorority, because I do love being around people, and I know it's a major part of my future (as a future public relations major, I'm pretty sure network and a social life will help me out a TON when it comes to job hunting/internships/resumes/experience) and honestly, it's the kind of thing that I'd regret not doing. And if it does bum me out, I can just not pay my dues sophomore year, and I'm done with it! But I'm pretty sure that won't end up being the case :)
